The 5th New Mexico Open, presented by the New Mexico Sports Authority, to be held at Tenpins & More in Rio Rancho, August 14-17, will be the state's biggest and richest bowling tournament, with cash prizes and awards of more than $32,000.

 

That's an increase of more than $5,500 over last year and marks the tournament's fifth consecutive year of growth.

 

Entries have increased each year too from 78 in 2004, 89 in 2005, 103 in 2006 and 132 last year. A field of 156 is expected this year.

 

Defending his title will be Coloradan, Shawn Lee of Centennial who beat former PBA Tour Rookie of the Year, Chris Johnson of Dallas, TX, 238-193 in the championship match.

 

The tournament features a traditional format over 25 games of qualifying and match-play prior to the top five meeting in "sudden-death" one-game elimination matches. The winner receives at least $6,000.
